Grand Theft Auto 6 is coming out soon, and by that, we mean, sooner than ever. We don’t exactly know when Rockstar Games intends to release the next GTA game, but we’re aware that it plans to reveal it at some point early next month – hopefully, it’ll be on December 10, the exact day of the company’s 10th anniversary.
However, as the talks surrounding its development intensifies, Take-Two Interactive continues to feed the internet with fuel for speculation. Specifically, Rockstar’s parent company has ignited an interesting debate about the potential use of generative AI in creating the next chapter of the iconic franchise.
In a recent earnings call, the ever-vocal Take-Two CEO, Strauss Zelnick, addressed investors and shed light on how current AI technology could prove instrumental in crafting large-scale games like GTA 6. However, Zelnick noted, this tech-savvy approach to game development does not equate to faster or cheaper production, emphasizing that AI will be the latest tool in its massive repertoire rather than a catch-all solution. The goal of incorporating AI in game development is touted to streamline processes and elevate the quality of output, yet Zelnick maintains that it will not necessarily reduce the cost of such blockbuster titles.
The controversial topic of AI development in gaming is not new. Proponents argue that it enables the creation of assets and content at an unprecedented pace, freeing developers to concentrate on more complex tasks. Critics, however, are wary of the potential for AI to displace human workers in an already volatile job market. Nonetheless, Zelnick is quite optimistic about AI’s role in improving gaming experiences, particularly by breathing life into non-playable characters, transforming them from scripted beings into dynamic entities that enhance player engagement.
This focus on NPCs is far from isolated. Zelnick imagines an evolution where the inhabitants of any virtual world offer a new level of interactivity and depth. Such advancements could redefine the player’s experience, making encounters in each world a unique and potentially limitless journey.
Zelnick’s cautious but forward-looking stance on AI reflects a broader industry trend. Major studios are betting big on AI tools for various facets of game creation. But, Take-Two, and more specifically, Rockstar, isn’t any other company – it’s a trend-setter, above all else. If Rockstar sees potential in using AI, it will use it to its fullest extent. Of course, this doesn’t mean that GTA 6 will use AI, but we’re curious to see how if that’s true. More importantly, Rockstar’s history of doubling down on successful features from previous titles all but confirms that future entries in, let’s say, Red Dead Redemption, will take things even further.
Nevertheless, despite the promise and potential of AI, Zelnick is clear that it won’t replace human creativity at the core of game development. Instead, it’s expected to raise the bar, enabling developers to dedicate more time to do creative work by automating routine tasks. The expectation is that while AI may not reduce the cost of AAA titles like GTA 6, it will lead to more sophisticated gaming experiences.
With Rockstar’s reputation for pushing boundaries and Take-Two’s commitment to innovation, the industry is poised for GTA 6 to potentially become a landmark title, showcasing the latest AI technology. However, as Zelnick pointed out, the integration of AI will not lead to a decrease in game prices. Instead, consumers should expect an elevation in overall quality and a more intense competitive landscape for those unable to leverage such resources.
The potential impact of AI on the gaming industry remains a subject of intense debate, with concerns over job loss and displacement as well as ethical implications. Zelnick’s comments suggest that while AI will change the industry landscape, the need for human creativity and skill remains undiminished.
If Take-Two’s approach is any indication, the next installment in the Grand Theft Auto series could not only feature the most advanced urban landscapes and character interactions but also set a new standard for how technology can be used to enhance the art of game design and the immersive experience of players.
As always, of course, only time will tell the truth. For now, GTA fans can keep themselves busy with a slew of offerings straight from the horse’s mouth, including “free” access to GTA trilogy and a pair of GTA classics for GTA+ subscribers.
