As those of you who have been playing Grand Theft Auto Online for a few years now will know, its become something of a tradition for Rockstar Games to drop a major DLC in the warm months of summer. While details on this year’s major GTA Online summer update are scarce, the developer has begun dropping hints about what we can expect.
Recently, Rockstar revealed new benefits making their way to GTA+, the monthly subscription service giving GTA Online players extra perks and access to some classic Rockstar titles. Nestled among news of additional games joining the lineup and an extra monthly GTA$ 1,000,000 was one stray mention of upcoming content.
As part of the GTA+ membership benefits, players will gain access to a “bonus super car” later this year as part of “this summer’s big GTA Online update”. Simply mentioning that there will be a big summer update, and that it will include at least one car isn’t massive news on its own; though concrete confirmation is always nice. However, there’s more.
Alluded to in vaguer terms, The Vinewood Club will be getting additional content “later this year. We’ve got a fair bit of time to go before the warm summer sun begins shining, but we’d bet that the teased Vehicle Workshop and companion app will be launching alongside the big update rather than before.
That’s the extent of the official information on the summer update, but it is fairly early – more details will be revealed bit by bit leading up to the release of the DLC. The fandom has, of course, already begun speculation despite the minor scraps we have to go on.
One theory is that the companion app that GTA+ subscribers will be able to access on the in-game iFruit will be somehow tied to the large number of unavailable cars. Rockstar Games began the rather divisive practice of rotating a bunch of older vehicles out of circulation to tackle the sheer, insane volume of cars in the game, with a limited number of these kept available only for GTA+ subscribers.
Currently, even as a subscriber there is a massive number of cars that are not available for purchase. Essentially the prevailing theory is that, with the new Vinewood Club benefit, subscribers will once again be able to purchase more, or all, of these ‘sunset’ vehicles. We’ll have to wait and see.
In the meantime, all there is to do is enjoy that extra monthly GTA$ 1,000,000 and wait until more details are revealed about the upcoming GTA Online summer update, and wait even more for the eventual launch of GTA 6.
